How to - Mix Dhol loops, Tabla loops etc.

Now you sit at your computer screen wondering what should you do with the loops and samples from your library (hopefully they contain Goldenchild loops).

Here is a quick tip on what we do in the studio when it comes to producing music with Indian loops and samples (mainly Indian percussion loops).

Scenerio: Sample Project contains dhol loops
What you need to have: 1 dhol loop in mono format
Steps:

1. Whatever DAW program you may have, create 2 tracks of your 1 dhol loop
2. Rename the track as such: Dhol-L and Dhol-R
3. Pan Dhol-L approx 75% to the Left (or any % to achieve desirable results)
4. Repeat step 3 and pan Right
5. Add small amounts of Delay to both tracks to give the loop a “live” feel
5. Add small amounts of Reverb to the tracks to allow the loop to sit in the mix
6. Add a Compressor plugin to the chain. Fast attack, 1:1 threshold

Remember, you must also add an EQ plugin to your chain — EQ is very important for the dhol to sit well into the mix. The complexity of the EQ process doesn’t make for a 1 size fit all sort of setting so play around with the EQ settings until you get a desirable result. As long as the dhol sits well and is not over-bearing where you cannot hear or make out the lyrics of the vocals, you are Golden ;)

We use Waves plugins for most of our production.

Next blog post will contain screen shots with delay/reverb settings that we currently use and have used on many of our hit tracks!
